Cadet Men

The Sharks Cadet Men faced a basketballscotland NL2 top of the table clash against West Lothian Wolves at Menzieshill on Saturday (28th Nov). Having had a wake-up call in their comeback win against Cumbernauld Chiefs the previous week, the Sharks came out of the gates with intensity on defence and excellent movement on offense in the early stages of the game. With a distinct size advantage, the Sharks did a good job of getting the ball inside to Kevin Myers in the post and he showed how much he has developed his back-to-the-basket game as he helped the Sharks to a 16-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. However, in the 2nd period West Lothian came right back into the game through a very good display of perimeter shooting whilst the Sharks work rate on the rebounds dropped off and their offensive movement slowed. By halftime the Wolves had overtaken the Sharks and led by 3 points.

The 3rd quarter proved to be one of the most disappointing periods of play by the Sharks Cadets all season. Unable to pick up the work rate that they started the game with, the Sharks began to show frustration and struggled to get any offensive teamwork going whilst allowing the West Lothian players to shoot unopposed from the perimeter and get easy opportunities in transition. This allowed the Wolves to increase their lead to 19 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. With indiscipline becoming an issue, the Sharks received some stern words from the coaching team before the 4th period and this seemed to help as they came out with impressive defensive intensity and improved movement on offense. With the fastbreak finally working and with James Thomson and Steven Ross finding their way to the basket more often, the Sharks cut the lead to just 9 points with 2 minutes to go. Unfortunately though, the Sharks missed 4 easy lay-up opportunities in the final couple of minutes and that allowed the Wolves to take the win 63-52.

After displaying what they are capable of in the 1st and 4th quarter, the Sharks went away disappointed that they were unable to sustain that level of play throughout the game. Next week they face an away match against Dunfermline Reign as they aim to get back into winning ways.
